Psychosocial Programs

Psychosocial programs ensure patients and families learn to cope with physical and emotional aspects of childhood cancer and serious blood disorders. These psychosocial programs are supported by an experienced team of social workers, psychologists and child life specialists, who are dedicated solely to young patients with cancer and blood disorders. The psychosocial team brings a sense of familiarity and bond between patients and the health care team and ensures that patients and their families receive support, encouragement and access to community resources.

Child Life Specialists help children learn about their illnesses, prepare them for medical procedures and adapt to the hospital environment through education, medical play therapy and family centered care. Also, a dedicated hematology/oncology playroom helps patients find comfort through play and allows them to spend time with new friends, siblings and family. A full-time, certified Child Life specialist is dedicated solely to the care of patients with cancer and serious blood disorders.

Psychologists provide crisis intervention, behavioral therapy and family support. Psychologists help young cancer patients, their parents and siblings understand their emotions and work through challenges in positive and appropriate ways.

Social workers provide individual patient therapy and offer support and education to families. Social workers provide guidance and access to outpatient programs, counseling, support groups, special camps and community resources.

Psychosocial programs bring a sense of normalcy to patients and their families. These program include:

Art Therapy Program

The Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center has a special art therapist, who provides art therapy sessions to patients with cancer and blood disorders. The art therapist can do a one time session art project with a patient or have multiple sessions depending on how long the patient stays on the unit. Art therapy has been proven to show reduced stress and anxiety in children and allows them to address some of their fears and concerns that they can’t articulate or aren’t ready to share.

Discovery Arts Program

A special volunteer group called “Discovery Arts,” frequently visits patients with cancer and serious blood disorders toting costumes, music, arts, crafts and games to play with Miller Children’s patients. Discovery Arts volunteers—who sing, dance, act and play—provide a safe place for patients to express their feelings about their illness, while creating a fun atmosphere. These fun, interactive explorations of music, dance, art and drama bring a sense of normalcy.

School Reintegration Program

This program is designed to help children return to school and other daily living situations. Specially trained psychologists, social workers and child life specialists work directly with school personnel and classmates to provide a smooth transition and ensure a safe and supportive environment for the child.

The JJCCC School Reintegration Program:

  • Assesses any learning difficulties associated with neuropsychological impairment caused by the child’s illnesses or extensive treatment regimens
  • Provides recommendations for educational services, including special education
  • Advocates for the implementation of special education and other services that could be helpful to the patient
  • Advises parents and older patients of their legal rights regarding assistance that is available through school districts
  • Counsels patients and families about the emotional and psychological stress of returning to school, college, work, etc.
  • Visits classrooms to educate students, decrease fear from peers and help returning patients succeed and reach their full potential
