Why A Safety Program
Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach decided to focus its local Kohl's Cares® initiative, Kohl's Keeping Kids Safe program, on helmet, car and pedestrian safety because:
- California law requires that anyone under age 18 wear an approved helmet when riding a bicycle.
- Many children ride bicycles, skateboards or scooters without the appropriate helmet, and a fall to the ground can be life changing
— Children should always wear helmets that bear a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSQ) label – certifying that it meets or exceeds the safety standards.
- Car accidents are the leading cause of death and disability for children between the ages of 1 and 15.
- Children need to be in the correct car seat for their age and weight.
- It is the law that children must be restrained correctly in a child seat or booster seat until they are at least 6 years old or weigh 60 pounds. All children ages 12 and younger should sit in the back seat and be properly restrained at all times. See more on car seat safety.
