The hematology/oncology care center at Miller Children’s has board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologists in-house, around the clock, and an expert hematology/oncology care team that covers specialty and supportive care. These experts provide a full-range of hematology/oncology care, from diagnosis to treatment and transition of patients to outpatient specialty centers.
Board-Certified Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologists
A hematologist-oncologist is a doctor with special training in the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases, especially blood cell cancers. This type of doctor is trained in hematology (the study of blood) and oncology (the study of cancer).

A clinical nurse specialist is responsible for arranging authorizations for procedures, appointments, special tests and studies and communication among the child, family, school, primary care physician, team and others involved in the care of the child. The nurse specialist also assists the child and family in obtaining medical supplies, laboratory appointments and other care as needed.
A research nurse assists with research and organizes pediatric patients for admission and treatment in clinical trials and registries.
A nurse educator teaches and prepares licensed practical nurses (LPN) and registered nurses (RN) for entry into practice positions.
A physical therapist is a health care professionals concerned with prevention, treatment and management of movement disorders arising from conditions and diseases occurring throughout the child’s growth.
A licensed medical professional who specializes in the study of the structure and function of the brain and related behaviors or mental processes. A psychologist may provide psychological evaluation, assessment, testing, and treatment, but may not prescribe medications.
Social workers help provide referrals to a broad range of community based agencies and organizations to assist the child and family in obtaining supportive care and assistance. The social worker also is available to provide crisis counseling, individual and family counseling.
Child Life Specialists or assistants can help your child better understand his or her condition and treatment while making him or her feel more comfortable during their stay or visit to Miller Children’s.
Registered dieticians assess patients’ nutritional needs, develop and implement nutrition programs, and evaluate and report the results. They also confer with doctors and other health care professionals to coordinate medical and nutritional needs.
