A Typical Day & Schedule

The rehabilitation team will evaluate your child upon admission and reassess them on a regular basis. The team will work together to set weekly goals to match your child’s progress. Information about your child, his/her personality, likes, and dislikes are very important to the assessment process. Previous school history, interest and hobbies, and a “parent interview” are all a part of the evaluation.

Daily Schedule

A typical day in acute rehabilitation can be busy depending on the patient’s tolerance and endurance activities. Each child will have a different schedule to suit their unique needs. The schedule will be posted weekly in your child’s room. Physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, recreational therapists, neuropsychologists, social workers, child life specialists, and school teachers could all be listed on the schedule.

Your child will receive three hours of therapy Monday through Friday and one and a half hours on Saturday. Sunday is considered a rest day. A typical day may include the following:

  • Breakfast is usually served at 8 a.m.
  • Getting ready for the day – Patients are encouraged and recommended to get dressed themselves in their own clothes depending on their current ability.
  • Medications will be given throughout the day at their scheduled time by a nurse, if needed.
  • Therapy usually begins at 9 a.m. Each session will last up to 50 minutes.
  • Lunch arrives around noon each day.
  • Snacks are provided upon request.
  • Rest time will be added to the schedule and can be taken between therapy sessions.  A low stimulation environment is very important to your child.
  • Dinner usually arrives around 6 p.m.
  • Bedtime should be no later than 9 p.m. This will help them get enough rest for the next day of therapy.
  • The schedule could change to accommodate your child’s changing needs.

Weekly Conferences & Team Rounds

Each week the physicians, nurses and therapists working with you and your child meet for a team conference. Progress is discussed and treatment goals and plans for the next week are set. Your concerns as a family may also be shared by the social worker during these meetings. After the first week, you are invited to attend the weekly team conference, as you and you child are valuable team members. The team conferences are generally held Wednesday mornings in the play/activity room across the hall from the rehab gym on Miller West.
