Intensivists & Care Team
Smiles and tears of joy were brought to the faces of the Jimenez family when they received donated toys and gifts from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) care team and staff at Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach from a toy drive the department themselves coordinated. Every year, the PICU Partnership Council adopts a family who has been going through a hard time and organizes a toy drive for them around the holidays. Juan Jimenez, a 5-month-old, has been in the PICU for three months and the staff unanimously decided that his family would be chosen for the toy drive this year.
“The toy drive donation shows how compassionate and dedicated the nurses and staff are in the PICU,” says Alireza Fathi, M.D., associate medical director of Pediatric Critical Care. “Families of patients, become our own families, and Christmas time is the perfect time to take care of them as if they are our own.”
There were many gifts donated, including stuffed stockings, gift certificates and wrapped toys that the family took home to open on Christmas morning. The family opened one gift right away which was Disneyland tickets for everyone in the family.
“Words cannot express how much this means to us with everything going on with our family.” said Alvaro Jimenez, father of Juan. “We haven’t even had time to think about going shopping and we’re beyond grateful.”
The PICU has board-certified intensivists in-house, 24/7 along with a primary team of nurses and respiratory therapists trained specifically in pediatric critical care. All pediatric sub-specialties are available for consultation. A specially trained health care team at Miller Children’s, known for providing life-saving care, is available for critically ill babies, children and adolescents.
