Transition Back to Books – Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach Hosts a “Back to School” Event for Children With Chronic Conditions
LONG BEACH, Calif., Sept. 12, 2011 – Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach hosted an informative “back to school” event for more than 40 parents and caretakers of children and young adults with a serious or chronic illness. The event was geared towards families and children who are navigating the school system after a long hospitalization or their child has struggled in school due to disability, injury or illness.
Speakers came from the Greater Long Beach community, including Harbor Regional Center, Long Beach Unified School District, Carlson Home Hospital School and the Department of Rehabilitation. Health care experts answered questions and helped families navigate through this process.
“Having this ‘back to school’ event at Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach is such a valuable resource for parents and caregivers, says Anna Baumgartner, Psy.D., psychologist and school reintegration coordinator, Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center, Miller Children’s. "Navigating the school system can be very complex particularly for children with a serious or chronic illness.”
