Rehabilitation Gyms & Pool Therapy

Miller Children’s Hospital has five rehabilitation gyms, two are at Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and three are in the full-service Termino Outpatient Rehabilitation Specialty Center in East Long Beach.

Miller Children’s Hospital-Based Gyms

  • Main Gym – Ground Floor

Miller Children’s offers a fully-equipped pediatric rehabilitation gym on the ground floor of Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach. This gym is the largest gym at Miller Children’s and is bright, colorful and family friendly. The main gym is full of kid-size exercise and conditioning equipment—such as exercise bikes, balance balls and treadmills—and mobility and sensory tools—such as cargo nets, a rope swing and a set of stairs—proving both physical and occupational therapies in a family centered setting. There is also a special room within the gym to work on speech therapy through music. A colorful outdoor playground is located just outside the rehabilitation gym allowing children going through recreational therapy to play and adapt to the outdoor environment, while working on their skills. This gym is equipped for the rehabilitation needs of all patients, regardless of their age.

  • Miller West Gym – Miller West (General Pediatrics)

The Miller West gym is a medium sized gym that is situated on the general pediatric unit called Miller West. The gym has a lot of basic rehabilitation equipment such as exercise and conditioning equipment and rehabilitation mats, where children can practice some of their daily rehabilitation treatments. This gym is equipped for the rehabilitation needs of all patients, regardless of their age.

Outpatient Gyms – Termino Outpatient Specialty Center

The Termino Outpatient Specialty Center has three small to mid-size rehabilitation gyms that are broken up by age and type of rehabilitation therapy needed.

  • Suite G19 Gym
The suite G19 gym is a more “standard” rehabiliation gym, with exercise and physical conditioning equipment, such as treadmills and exercise bikes. This gym is primarily used for older children and adolescents.
  • Suite G20 Gym
The suite G20 gym is often used for cognitive and speech therapy. A colorful room filled with a ball jump and rope swing also helps the physical therapy needs of young children.

Pool Therapy

pool therapyIn partnership with Long Beach Memorial, the pediatric rehabilitation program at Miller Children’s offers a full-size indoor pool, set at a comfortable temperature, which is available for daily therapy. Not only is it in a fun setting for kids, but water therapy can help improve functions such as moving, reaching and breathing. It also relaxes muscles and makes movement easier, which may not be found with land-based intervention. The fear of falling down is removed and the warm water reduces body weight reducing the chances of overexertion.

Patients who especially benefit from pool therapy:

  • Traumatic injuries
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Bone, joint or muscle disorders
  • Neurological and/or developmental disorders
  • Sensory processing/integration disorders
  • Connective tissue disease and rheumatol disorders

Pool therapy is an important part of the patient’s complete therapy program. Water therapy combines instruction, guidance and specialized exercises in a relaxing and therapeutic environment.
