What to Expect

Following a clinic visit, your child’s doctor may have ordered tests or procedures. Once the tests and procedures are complete, the doctor will explain your child’s situation and recommend a specific treatment.

  • Diary – After the first visit, the doctor may require the parent to track the child’s blood pressure, urine testing and bed wetting activity. This is to ensure that the Renal Care Center Team can use the information to accurately address the child’s health care needs.

The Renal Center will also put you and your child in touch with a Child Life Specialist who will provide a free pre-surgery orientation. These orientations will help pediatric patients understand what to expect while in the hospital, reduce anxiety and provide a tour of the areas they will encounter on the day of their renal procedure. Any questions you or your child has will be answered.

After the Transplant

After transplant, the child will be cared for by the transplant team at the referred hospital to ensure a successful acceptance of the new kidney. Depending on the child’s acuity, two follow-up appointments will occur weekly for one month after transplant and then the number of visits is reduced depending on the child’s needs and recovery rate.

The scheduled visits will ensure your child:

  • Shows no sign of infection or organ rejection
  • Is returning to a normal lifestyle
  • Is recovering from the procedure
  • Is educated about how to take any prescribed medicines

Sometimes follow-up care is transferred back to Miller Children’s once all the transplant requirements have been met.
