People of all ages and from all walks of life dedicate thousands of hours each year to Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach. Volunteers are valued members of the health care team. All volunteer programs at Miller Children’s & Women's provide volunteers the opportunity to gain valuable experiences in the medical field and learn new skills while helping others.
The staff in the volunteer resources department works closely with volunteers to help determine the best placement. The goal is to match the volunteers’ interests, skills and time available with the needs of Miller Children’s & Women's.
Adults are encouraged to join the team and make a difference. Whether retired or working, there are many ways to participate and contribute. Volunteers are scheduled at least two hours per week and placement is based on position openings. New volunteers will be required to attend a four-hour volunteer orientation, which will help them to assume their role as a member of the volunteer team.
To begin the process of becoming a part of the Adult Service Volunteer team, potential volunteers need to contact the Child Life Department at (562) 933-8060. At that time, an in-person interview will be scheduled to discuss the potential volunteer’s interests, skills, and availability.
Once accepted, documentation of the volunteer’s immunization history, including measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox and tetanus along with the results of a tuberculin skin test will be required. Volunteers must also consent to a security background check.
The Volunteen program is for high school students ages 15-18. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain insight into health care related careers. Teens are accepted into the Volunteen program in the summer months with a commitment of two hours per week. All teens are required to wear the Volunteen uniform which is available through the volunteer office. Requirements for becoming a member of the Volunteen program:
